Chapter 18

“No, I don’t think this was Leroy,” Rosemary shook her head. “And I’m not sure the truck Dwayne mentioned was him either.”

“Look,” Carlos sighed, glancing from his paper scattered desk. “Have you seen the paperwork here, and you want me to get more so I can check out video surveillance from lord knows where around Jaqueline’s house in case someone was possibly following Pruitt, even though she isn’t sure. Is that right?”

“Yeah,” Gabby replied impassively.

“Pretty much,” Ashley added.

“I have work to do,” he replied, picking up a pen and grabbing one of the bits of paper.

“And you’ll get it done faster without three women sitting in your office,” Gabby replied.

He looked at her. “You’re not going to leave until I check it out?”

“Nope,” Gabby sat back in her chair and pulled a nail file from her purse, gently rounding the edge of one unpainted nail. Carlos sighed. “Tyrell!”

Tyrell opened the door and poked his head into the office with a grin. “Hey boss. Hey Gabby, Ashley, Rosemary, were the plants, okay?”

“They were fine, thank you Tyrell,” Rosemary smiled.

“Aw, it’s nothing, I like plants you know.” Carlos cut him off with a glare. “Sorry, what did you need, boss?”

“Try and grab me any video surveillance footage you can around Jaqueline’s place will you, and that apartment block that Pruitt built, apparently,” he glanced at the women sitting in his office. “There’s a chance he was being followed.”

“I already did that boss,” Tyrell replied. Carlos frowned. “When you said to pull any surveillance footage, I could find to work out a timeline on Pruitt, I figured maybe he was at the complex or his girlfriend’s so….”

“You looked at it yet?” Carlos asked.

“Not all of it,” he admitted. “It’s on my to do list.”

“Well,” Carlos smiled, “Looks like now we have some volunteers to help look,” he glanced at Gabby with a smirk.

“Us?”

“You,” he replied, ready to follow Tyrell when Carlos’ phone buzzed. He picked it up. “Ramirez. Oh, hey doc,” Carlos paused a frown growing on his face. “You sure? Thanks.”

“What is it?” Ashley asked.

“Blood on that brooch Bailey found. It’s human, possibly from two people but it’s mixed up, contaminated.”

“But it could have been from Pruitt,” Rosemary sighed.

“Given where it was likely found, I’d guess yes,” Carlos replied.

“A rose brooch would suggest a woman,” Gabby put in.

“Maybe not,” Tyrell replied. “I saw a picture of it. It looked like an old tie pin to me. I remember my Pops had one, not a rose, I think it was a carnation or something, he’d wear it when he went dancing with Grams.”

“So, not the most helpful clue ever then,” Gabby sighed.

“I guess we’ll see,” Carlos replied.

Tyrell led them into a small poorly lit room at the rear of the sheriff’s station. A bank of computers sat flickering in the dim light. He reached to a shelf and pulled down a box containing several dozen SD cards.

“There must be hours of footage here,” Gabby sighed.

“Yep,” Tyrell nodded. “You all want a coffee? It's a station house brew, nothing fancy, but it’s hot and caffeinated.
